Steephill is an independent day school which takes pupils from 3½ to
11 years old. It is situated in the beautiful Fawkham Valley area in
a quiet lane overlooking the 13th century church.
The school was founded in 1935 by
Miss Eileen Bignold who established its excellent reputation for
high academic standards. In 1990, following the death of Miss
Bignold, the School became a charitable trust administered by a
Board of Governors.
The School has built on its early success and has an excellent
reputation for academic results. Small classes and high expectations
have led to a high success rate for children applying to grammar
schools, grammar schools taking the top 10% of children and
selective independent schools. Despite being a mixed ability school,
in 2010, 91% of the year group passed the 11+. In previous years
this has ranged from 75% to 85%.
Steephill
School
is also keen to promote the arts and
has been awarded the SILVER ARTS AWARD by
the Arts Council for providing a very high standard and diverse
opportunity for the children to take part in all the arts (art,
design & technology, drama & music, etc.). The School have been
winners and runners up in many categories at the Gravesham Festival
in recent years. We have been winners of the recorder section and
group choral speaking. Also this year we had lots of winners in solo
singing, single choral speaking, piano, ensemble and the choir.
The School is also keen to develop children through sport and play
matches against other schools. The children have a large sports
field for football, athletics, cricket, hockey, netball and rounders.
Short tennis and netball are played on the purpose built court.
Steephill has pleasant grounds, mostly lawn and an integrated
orchard. These areas allow for plenty of opportunity to explore
nature and to run free at break times.
