We had a fantastic time at our Maths Challenge Day this week.
The morning started off with a whole school House Maths Competition, out on the field. It was a bit of a dreary morning, but the the chldrens' spirits certainly weren't dampened as they fizzed with enthusiasm and waited for their turn to put their mathematical thinking caps (and running legs!) on.
The Pre-School's challenge was to select shapes and then race to place them in a box; Lower 1 selected numbers; Upper 1 and Class 2 had to use their number bonds; Class 3 & 4's challenge was to work out how much change they would get from £5 when buying different priced items; Class 5 played a countdown style game where working in teams they had to reach a total number using given numbers; and Class 6 had a challenging multiplication task!
All the children did brilliantly and put in a great effort. They thoroughly enjoyed this event which involved a lot of team work, and it was wonderful to see the older children helping the younger ones complete their tasks.
It was a close call, but the winning house overall was Francis.
The number crunching activities continued throughout the rest of the day with practical maths challenges in each class and a stock market activity.
