Lower 1 to Class VI Pupils are taught the core curriculum subjects of English, maths and science. Their timetable also includes history, geography, religious education, nature, French (from Lower 1), art & craft, design & technology, information technology, P.E., swimming (Classes III) and sports. |
The aim of the school is to develop each child's
academic potential in small wide-ability classes with experienced and
qualified teachers. As well as academic achievement the school aims to bring
out the pupils other abilities in such areas as art, drama, music and sport.
The pupils also learn to fit in well in the small community of which they
are a part, to respect others and treat them kindly, and to care for the
school's premises and equipment in a responsible way. |

The aim of the Nursery is to develop each child's social, physical and academic potential. The Nursery follows the Dfee's guidelines on Early Learning Goals in order to attain these and information is available at the school.
Within the small teaching classes, the day provides learning opportunities through written work and through play. The children learn to fit in well in the small community of which they are a part, to respect others and treat them kindly, and to care for the school's premises and equipment.
The pupils take part in many activities including sport, music, computer study, use of scientific and technological apparatus, P.E. on small and large equipment, as well as enjoying the school's rural setting. Children who join the Nursery are invited to spend an afternoon to meet their new class teachers and other pupils during the term prior to starting at Steephill.

When a child is ready to move to Lower I, usually the term in which the child turns 5, the Nursery teacher will discuss this with the parents, Headteacher and Lower I teachers. To enhance a smooth transition the children visit Lower I every Monday morning for one hour during the half term before going up. Parents are invited to an evening for progress reports in the Autumn and Spring terms and receive a written report at the end of the School year.
As well as the option of after-school care children with an older sibling who leaves school at a later time may take advantage of a free care facility until their older brother or sister is also ready to go home.
