At Steephill we use music in many ways throughout the school.

Music is at the heart of everyday life at Steephill School, inspiring creativity, confidence, and a love of performance. Every class enjoys a weekly CUSP curriculum music lesson, giving pupils the chance to sing and play instruments – from percussion to electronic keyboards. Children learn to compose, listen to, and appraise music, and perform for each other and an audience.

In addition, children in Rashford and Hawking classes have a 45-minute weekly instrumental lesson learning the recorder, while Aderin-Pocock and Turing Classes focus on the ukulele. For those who wish to go further, our instrumental ensemble offers the chance to play tuned and untuned percussion, recorders, guitars, drums and keyboards together.

We also offer individual or group peripatetic lessons for piano, guitar and keyboard, helping children develop their skills and confidence at their own pace.

Our pupils regularly take part in local music festivals, including Gravesham, Maidstone, and Bromley, earning awards and celebrating their achievements. Each Spring Term, we hold the annual Steephill Showcase, a highlight of the school calendar where KS2 pupils perform, sharing their talents and celebrating our future musicians.

At Steephill, music isn’t just a subject - it’s an experience that inspires, challenges and delights every child.

At Steephill, music plays an integral role in our curriculum, offering children the opportunity to express themselves creatively and develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Music is taught by specialist teachers, ensuring high-quality instruction and inspiring musical experiences for all pupils.

  • Specialist Teaching: Our specialist music teachers provide expert guidance, covering a wide range of musical styles and techniques. Children learn to listen and appraise music, compose their own pieces, and develop their understanding of musical theory.

  • Extracurricular Opportunities: We offer a variety of musical activities beyond the classroom to further nurture our pupils’ talents:

    • Lower and Upper School Choirs: Both our lower and upper school choirs provide children with the chance to develop their vocal skills and perform at school events and local community performances.
    • Peripatetic Lessons: Children have the opportunity to receive one-to-one instrumental lessons in the violin and piano, fostering individual musical development and mastery.
  • Competitions and Festivals: Steephill participates in a range of musical competitions, providing pupils with exciting opportunities to showcase their talents. We regularly enter the Maidstone Festival and the Bromley Festival, where our pupils demonstrate their musical skills and gain performance experience.

At Steephill, we believe music is a powerful tool for personal expression and community building. Through our diverse curriculum and extracurricular offerings, we aim to inspire every child to explore their musical potential.

Steephill Choirs at the Maidstone Festival – 29th November 2025

We are delighted to announce that our talented Steephill School choirs will be performing at the Maidstone Festival on Friday 29th November. This exciting event is a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to showcase their voices, share their love of music, and represent Steephill with pride.

At Steephill, we believe that music plays a vital role in building confidence, creativity, and community. Through choir, our children learn the joy of performing together, develop self-belief, and experience the thrill of sharing their music beyond the classroom.

Taking part in the Maidstone Festival extends and enriches our curriculum offer, giving pupils the chance to perform in a professional setting, celebrate their achievements, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

We couldn’t be prouder of our young singers and can’t wait to see them shine on stage!
