Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Relationships and Sex Education

At Steephill School, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) forms an integral part of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum. We teach PSHE using the comprehensive programme developed by the PSHE Association, ensuring our provision is current, structured and aligned with national expectations.

Our RSE curriculum follows the Medway plans, which have been quality assured through a close partnership between Medway Public Health Directorate and the PSHE Association. This provides a carefully sequenced and age-appropriate programme of study.

What We Teach

In primary education, the statutory focus is on building positive, respectful relationships and promoting pupils’ emotional wellbeing. Themes covered across the school include:

  • Healthy relationships, including friendships

  • Families and different family structures

  • Growing and changing, including puberty

  • Personal hygiene

  • Changing feelings and emotions

  • Becoming more independent

  • Keeping safe, including online safety

  • Developing self-esteem and confidence

In line with statutory guidance for primary schools, teaching focusses on:

  • Building positive relationships with friends, family and other adults

  • Understanding personal space and boundaries

  • Showing respect for others

  • Recognising appropriate and inappropriate or unsafe contact (physical and non-physical)

  • Developing the foundations of consent (which is formally taught at secondary level)

  • Identifying the features of healthy relationships that promote happiness and security

  • Understanding how friendships and positive relationships support good mental health

Relationships education also provides structured opportunities to promote positive emotional and mental wellbeing, helping pupils to understand their feelings and seek support when needed.

How We Deliver RSE

RSE education is taught in every year group and is carefully sequenced to ensure progression. The curriculum is monitored and regularly reviewed by staff and the governing body to ensure it remains effective, appropriate and compliant.

All RSE teaching takes place in a safe, supportive learning environment and is underpinned by our school ethos and values. We encourage respectful discussion, thoughtful reflection and age-appropriate questioning.
