Promoting British Values

At Steephill School, the promotion of fundamental British values is integral to our ethos and daily practice. Through our curriculum, pastoral provision, collective worship, leadership opportunities and wider school life, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to become responsible, respectful and active members of society.

Democracy

Pupils are encouraged to express their views, listen to the perspectives of others and contribute meaningfully to decision-making within the school community. Opportunities to participate in School Council, Eco Council, ambassador roles and pupil voice activities help pupils understand democratic processes and recognise that their opinions can influence positive change. Through voting and consultation, pupils gain first-hand experience of democracy in action.

The Rule of Law

Pupils develop a clear understanding of the importance of rules, laws and personal responsibility. The school’s values and expectations provide a consistent framework that helps pupils understand how rules contribute to a safe, fair and respectful environment. Through everyday experiences, curriculum learning and discussions about rights and responsibilities, pupils learn the importance of making positive choices and understanding the consequences of their actions.

Individual Liberty

Within a supportive and nurturing environment, pupils are encouraged to make informed choices, take appropriate risks and develop independence. They learn how to exercise their rights and freedoms responsibly, including understanding how to stay safe online and in the wider world. Through leadership opportunities, enrichment activities and personal development programmes, pupils build confidence, resilience and self-awareness.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is a cornerstone of life at Steephill School and is reflected through our core values of kindness, inclusivity and respect for others. Within our nurturing and supportive environment, pupils learn the importance of empathy, compassion and consideration in their interactions with others. They are encouraged to value individual differences, celebrate diversity and recognise the contribution that every member of the school community makes.

Positive relationships between pupils, staff and families foster a strong sense of belonging, where all individuals feel valued, listened to and supported. Through daily experiences, collaborative learning and opportunities to contribute to the wider life of the school, pupils develop respect for themselves and others, demonstrating kindness, courtesy and understanding in their words and actions.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Steephill School is a diverse and inclusive community, with families representing a range of faiths, cultures and backgrounds. Pupils are encouraged to develop an understanding of, and respect for, different beliefs and ways of life through Religious Education, PSHE, collective worship and wider enrichment opportunities.

The school actively celebrates the diversity within its own community by inviting parents, carers and family members to share their faiths, traditions, festivals and cultural experiences with pupils. These opportunities provide meaningful first-hand insights that deepen pupils’ understanding and appreciation of different perspectives. Through learning about both religious and non-religious worldviews, pupils develop curiosity, empathy and respect for others.

As a result, pupils value diversity, recognise the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect, and understand their role in creating an inclusive community where differences are welcomed and celebrated.

Our Pupil Ambassadors

At Steephill we pride ourselves on developing leaders for the future. Each child in Year 6 is allocated a role which they undertake for the duration of the school year. We challenge each of them to leave behind a lasting legacy which develops their role for future generations.

School Council & Eco Council

At Steephill School, we believe every child’s voice matters. Our School Council and Eco Council play a vital role in helping shape our school and the wider community and making positive changes for everyone.

Pupils from each class are elected to represent their peers and meet regularly to share ideas, discuss improvements and plan projects. Whether they are organising events, promoting kindness or suggesting ways to make learning even better, our School Council members show fantastic leadership and responsibility.

Working alongside them, our Eco Council champions sustainability across the school. From reducing waste and promoting recycling to encouraging wildlife and energy-saving initiatives, they help us all think and act in greener ways. Their passion inspires others to care for our planet—starting right here in our classrooms and playgrounds.

Together, our School Council and Eco Council empower children to be active citizens, confident communicators and caring members of our community.
