Phonics

Decades of research tells us that teaching children the phonics code is the quickest way to unlock the English language and teach them to read. At Steephill we follow the accredited synthetic scheme Anima Phonics from Pre-School through to the end of Class 2. The children have daily lessons which are carefully planned to provide clear progression, building on prior knowledge and linked directly to our reading scheme. Lessons are fun and interactive beginning with songs, actions, poems and linked practical activities in the EYFS and moving on to blending, segmenting and common exception words. At the end of Class 2 children can decode all new words, read and write with confidence and for pleasure.

Regular Phonics assessments ensure children make good progress and staff make use of the Anima Phonics intervention resources to support any children who require additional support.

English

At Steephill, our approach to teaching English is designed to foster a love for literature, develop critical thinking, and build confident communicators. We use The Literacy Tree, which centres around high-quality texts to inspire and engage children in their reading and writing journey.

Text-Based Approach

Our English curriculum is built around the power of storytelling. Using carefully selected core texts, we explore themes, language, and ideas that allow teachers to connect children deeply with literature. This text-based approach encourages creativity, empathy, and analytical skills while ensuring that grammar, spelling, and punctuation are taught in context.

We pride ourselves on introducing children to a variety of texts and fostering a lifelong love of reading. Our school library provides a wealth of resources to support this, and we are fortunate to offer a diverse range of books to our pupils.

  • Reading: We cultivate a culture of reading for pleasure and understanding. Teachers encourage children to explore a range of genres, authors, and themes. Through guided reading sessions, we aim to develop both fluency and comprehension.

  • Writing: Using texts as inspiration, teachers guide pupils to write for a range of purposes and audiences. Children are given opportunities to experiment with narrative structure, language choices, and different writing styles, from fiction to non-fiction.

  • Speaking and Listening: Oral communication is a core part of our English teaching. From discussions and debates to presentations and drama, we help children articulate their thoughts clearly and listen attentively to others.

  • Grammar and Vocabulary: Grammar and vocabulary lessons are integrated into our text-based units, ensuring that children learn these skills in a meaningful and contextualised way.

Each class has a 'Reading Corner' where children are encouraged to sit with a book and enjoy reading it!

We are incredibly proud of our Book Nook, introduced by the Year 6 pupils of 2024 as a lasting legacy. Located in the garden, this space allows all children to enjoy reading during break and lunchtimes, further nurturing a love of reading outside the classroom.
