Leadership is one the life’s skills which benefit a child as they are growing up, sees them through their time at school and into adulthood. Leadership is the understanding of how to be a good role model and behave in a way that inspires others to be their best.
At Steephill, we start this philosophy when the children enter Pre-school. Through assembly, circle time, Forest School activities, ‘monitor duties’, taking turns and being our best, the children are encouraged to start the pathway to good leadership skills.
As the children go through the school, a sense of responsibility for their own behaviour is fostered. This means understanding that their behaviour is in their control, that their behaviour affects others and that we all have a responsibility towards others.
This continued programme culminates in years 5 and 6 when at the end of year 6 the children work towards a Diploma in Leadership and Skills. The Leadership is broken down into the following skills:
Responding positively to constructive criticism
Communication of ideas
Leadership and Team-work skills can be nurtured every day in school, in extra-curricular clubs, through the curriculum and at play times. Opportunities in drama, sports and the arts support development. In years 5 and 6 the children also go on a residential course which is specifically designed to further enhance leadership skills and understanding.
Leadership skills and Team-work compliment Life Opportunities and children leaving the School in year 6 will be awarded the Steephill School Diploma of Life Skills.
As part of this programme, Steephill has a school council to enable the children to have a 'pupil voice'. Please click here to read the constitution.
Diploma in Life Skills
Throughout the School children develop different skills and in Year 6 we formally acknowledge these skills and their participation in School life and the community. Children can earn recognition for the the following:
At the end of Year 6 children can be awarded the Steephill Diploma in Life Skills.
One of the most important skills in life is being able to be a positive team member. At Steephill, we value this skill highly and take every opportunity to foster leadership skills and being a good tea member. We can do this in the classroom when children work together, outside when playing together, in games, in PE and in lessons on life skills. We also do some philosophy4children. See the link below.
In Year 5 and 6 the children go on a residential course; alternately to France and the Isle of Wight. These trips enable children to understand the need for independence and taking responsibilty for themselves in a very safe, caring and fun environment.
