Maths 

At Steephill School, we recognise that maths is a fundamental skill for everyday life and future success. Our goal is to nurture curious and confident mathematical thinkers who can make meaningful connections across mathematical concepts. We aim to develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills, preparing children to tackle increasingly complex challenges. Each child is challenged individually, allowing them to reach their full potential at their own pace.

Our lessons follow a ‘Mastery Approach,’ with a cohesive curriculum broken into carefully sequenced blocks. Concepts are introduced gradually to ensure a deep understanding and mastery. Lessons are designed to be both engaging and challenging, encouraging children to take risks and build resilience. We prioritise the use of mathematical language to foster confident communication about maths, helping each child grow in their understanding.

From Class 1, children begin working on timed times table and division questions to ensure rapid recall of multiplication and division facts early on. Additionally, to support learning beyond the classroom, all children from Class 1 receive a ‘Maths Shed’ login, giving them the opportunity to practice arithmetic at home. This, combined with regular arithmetic consolidation, builds fluency and independence in approaching problem-solving tasks.

We also participate in national competitions such as the First and Junior Maths Challenge, providing children with opportunities to showcase their skills and apply their knowledge in competitive settings.
